Dental Ozone and Biocompatible Dentistry
Mercury-Free Dentistry

Dental Ozone is the latest in Minimally Invasive Dentistry (actually non-invasive).

Ozone is a molecule of 3 oxygen atoms. It is a powerful antibacterial agent and therefore works well in dentistry, since most dental disease has a bacterial component (both decay and gum disease).

Ozone is safe and effective in the reduction of bacteria from tooth surfaces or around the gum line. Ozone is significantly better and more effective than chlorine based disinfectants and has the beauty of breakdown into oxygen instead of caustic or harmful substances.

Commerce and industry has used ozone for quite a long time. Most bottled water manufacturers use Ozone as the final step in their purification process (Dasani from CocaCola and Aquafina from PepsiCo).

Currently, Dentists use Dental Ozone in Europe, South Africa, Asia and Canada. It has NOT been FDA approved for Dental use in the United States, however, please be aware that often, routine dental procedures are not FDA approved.

Ozone may be used in various dental treatments and has been shown to be effective in minimally invasive dental procedures to assist in the reduction of tooth sensitivity, gum line pockets, gum line irritation, halitosis (bad breath) and has been shown to assist in the reversal of the decay process in shallow, initial cavities (without the need for anesthetic, drilling or filling). In the many years of Ozone usage for Dental or Medical procedures, there has never been a reported adverse effect.

Dental Ozone, like any dental or medical procedure, is not 100% effective. The success of any dental treatment is often dependent upon a variety of factors which may or may not be in anyone's control. These factors may include, but are not limited to: duration of the existing problem, severity of the problem, health status of the patient and healing ability of the patient.

In cases where ozone is not effective or if the patient chooses not to have ozone therapy, other dental treatment may be performed or may be necessary. This "other" treatment, is usually at a higher cost and may be performed by Dr. Stephen J. Gordon or by a Dental Specialist. These types of treatments include, but are not limited to: larger and or deeper fillings, crowns or caps, root canal treatment, tooth extraction, oral or periodontal gum surgery.

We feel that Dental Ozone is a useful adjunct to our Minimally Invasive, Conservation Dentistry, and therefore provide a guarantee to our patients. For any adult (permanent) tooth or problem that has been treated with Dental Ozone, if the usage does not yield improvement, we will gladly refund the money paid towards the ozone treatment to be applied as a credit on the patient's office account. This guarantee is for any problem diagnosed within 6 months of the Dental Ozone treatment. The credit then may be used for any purpose.

There is new and important information regarding the "ORAL - SYSTEMIC LINK".
This is the link between systemic disease (Diabetes, Cancer, Heart Condition, Stroke, Kidney Disease, etc) and oral bacteria which enter the bloodstream via swollen, bleeding gums and then invade remote parts of the body.

Click Here   <Facts about the Oral-Systemic Link

Watch the 5 minute video below, regarding the PerioProtect System for non-surgical reduction of Periodontal Disease (gumline disease / pockets) and for the reduction ofBacteria which are involved in the Oral-Systemic Link.
Dr. Gordon has been using this system since it became available and teaches this procedure to dentists nationwide.

Please be aware that national scientific studies have shown that over 90% of the Adult population (age 35 - 44 --which is "young" to be considered to have Periodontal Disease) have some form of gum disease, and the percentage is even higher for older age groups!

Mercury - Free & Mercury - Safe !

Dentistry at Millennium Park, Chicago -- WE are about as "GREEN" (Environmentally Conscious) a dental office as you can possibly get. We have always been concerned for the environment and we were "GREEN", before it was popular.

We have been Environmentally Conscious for so many years, well before the new "green" dental offices were even built!

We stopped placing Silver Amalgam (Mercury containing) fillings back in 1980, way before most dental offices. In 1981, we computerized our dental office (also before most dental practices). Now you may ask how does a computer make an office "GREEN"? By utilizing computer technology, we were able to reduce our paper consumption. Today, we are one of the few dental offices that has computer systems which are significantly more advanced allowing us to be considered "Chartless" (we have no physical patient record, it is all computer based) and therefore our paper consumption is about 97% less than the typical dental office.

We submit dental insurance claims electronically, through the internet (via a HIPAA compliant portal), without any paper being used and we can attach digital radiographs (x-rays) and digital photographs to the file thereby reducing the need to produce a radiograph or photograph hard copy. This electronic claim is also processed much faster for patient reimbursement.

We incorporated Digital Radiography (x-ray) very early on and this technology helps the environment because it allows us to take x-rays via a computer and without the use of any Chemicals (which are necessary to develop and process fiim-based radiographs). We have the ability to email the radiographs to specialists so that no paper is used.

We recycle paper, cardboard, plastic and toner cartridges and we use recycled goods whenever available.

When many dental offices use Chemical Sterilizers, we have always (since the 1950's) used Steam Autoclaves (which produce safe steam (water vapor) as a by product). We have never used Gluteraldehyde (a formaldehyde based antibacterial agent) for surface disinfection, as we did not like the side effects of this caustic chemical. Instead, we used non-toxic, safer solutions.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION CONCERN WATER SAFETY:

When I built this office in 2005, I purposely set out to utilize the best and newest technology for every aspect of my dental treatment.

One of the great items I had installed is a 5 Stage High Quality Water Filtration system for use in our dental treatment and for use in our Sterilizer.

We are proud of the fact that we have been dispensing Highly Filtered Water to our patients for over 10 years and continue to upgrade with the most current filter cartridges available.

This is another way that shows how we care for you, our valued patients.

When our office was recently built, we used renewable resources and designed the office to use energy star efficient devices and computer equipment. Our Dental Cabinetry is constructed with recycled materials. We have low water usage dental equipment, purify our own water with an advanced water multi-level filtration system and use compact fluorescent light bulbs for our primary lighting.

Although it is not a law or any requirement, I installed a Mercury Amalgam separating system. This device separates the harmful mercury from waste water that goes into the Chicago sewer system. When the device is full, we send the container to a recycling facility which safely discards the Mercury. It has been estimated that a majority of the toxic Mercury found in Lakes, Rivers and Streams is from dental origin. By installing and using this separating device, we do our part to minimize this pollution problem.

We are friendly and welcome you to come in for a tour anytime.

HydroAbrasion

Telephone: (312) 750-9000

HydroAbrasion: NO Drill Dentistry

Water & Air Abrasion = Drill-Free Dentistry (no Anesthetic!)
Water & Air abrasion or Hydro-abrasion is a system that is basically a miniature "sandblaster". Instead of turning on a whirling and noisy drill that vibrates, we give you a pair of protective glasses and then direct a thin, high-speed stream of water and microscopic (aluminum oxide) particles that gently removes decay from your tooth.

Great Advantages: There's no heat, no vibration, no noise and many times it can all be done without any anesthetic ("novocaine") therefore no numbing your mouth. You may feel a "cool" sensation but typically it will not hurt. A suction hose removes any gritty particles, which are made from aluminum oxide, a tasteless substance commonly found in toothpaste. It's harmless if swallowed.

An air abrasion system works best on small cavities that will be filled with non-metallic materials (tooth colored bonding). This works very well in conjunction with the DIAGNOdent and Dental Ozone. It is generally used to repair early, recently discovered tooth decay before it spreads.

Because this system can be precisely directed, there's less tooth structure lost in preparing for a filling so we conserve valuable tooth structure. Hydro-abrasion is used in conjunction with Micro-Dentistry. Dr. Gordon is a member of the Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry and the use of HydroAbrasion fits in quite well with this mindset.

As a result of the introduction of fluoride into water supplies and toothpastes, tooth surfaces have become more resistant to decay BUT decay is still possible and it is often concentrated in tiny, hidden parts of the teeth, where it can easily be missed until it has broken into the softer inner portion of the tooth (dentin or pulp) causing minor or greater sensitivity or pain. That is why we use the DIAGNOdent (Painless Laser Decay detector), to find these tiny areas of decay much sooner than they would be seen visually or on a radiograph (x-ray).

Hydro-abrasion is a major part of MicroDentistry techniques, because it can precisely remove very tiny layers of tooth structure. We use Special (Decay Detecting) dyes to assist in the location of these tiny pockets of decay, then we utilize Hydro-abrasion to gently open and remove the decay, and finally, the tooth is bonded with tooth-colored filling materials or a tooth-colored sealant.

Minor Disadvantages: Air abrasion does not work in the removal of existing silver amalgam fillings, and the aluminum oxide powder can be messy. Because it uses a high-pressure air / water stream, there's a minor possibility of injecting air into the cheeks or gums. Since an air abrasion system can be costly, only about ten percent of US dentists have air abrasion systems in their offices.

These preparations were performed without the use of Anesthetic.

At this point they will be treated with Dental Ozone and then filled with Tooth-Colored Bonding.

Swollen, red gums can often be the result of having teeth that are crowded or too widely spaced. Unfortunately, these are also signs of periodontal disease. When teeth are properly aligned, it helps the gums fit more securely around the teeth, allowing for the strongest and healthiest defense against potential periodontal problems.

Think of your teeth as a window to the health of your body. Your teeth and gums — and how they look to others when you smile—say a lot about your overall health. If you're taking good care of both, you're probably taking good care of the rest of you.

Tooth decay and gum disease are caused by bacteria. Left untreated, they can cause mouth sores, tender or bleeding gums, bad breath, and possible tooth loss. Studies by the American Dental Association have shown that oral infections can also lead to other more serious ailments such as heart disease,2 stroke,3 pneumonia4 and diabetes5. Correctly aligned teeth can also alleviate the issues that can be caused by an improper bite, speech or chewing difficulties, jaw problems, and increased wear on the tooth enamel. When you have straight teeth you end up with a great smile and increase the likelihood of improved oral health.
